Born in Kaohsiung and raised in Taipei, Tzu-Yu now lives and works between Hong Kong and Taipei as a performer, producer, and educator whose range spans jazz, pop, rock, and classical. He picked up the drums at 15 and quickly stood out — in 2004, at just 18, he won the national Yamaha Music Festival and was named "Asia's Best Drummer" of the year by legendary Japanese drummer Akira Jimbo. In 2010 he moved to the U.S. to study jazz drumming at Berklee College of Music.
In the pop world, Fish has extensive large-scale concert experience. A former member of Taiwanese rock band 831, he is the dedicated touring drummer for Chinese superstar Andy Lau — including the 2024 "Today is the Day" world tour — as well as for George Lam & Sally Yeh's "Till We're Old" world tour, and served as music director for Golden Melody winner Sky Wu's Asia tour. His collaborations are countless, including Eason Chan, Crowd Lu, Weibird, 9m88, Eve Ai, Princess Ai Tai, Michael Wong, Joey Yung, Richie Ren, Gigi Leung, and Tia Ray.
Beyond pop, Fish is a long-time force in jazz. In 2014 he formed the distinctively arranged jazz trio The Beat Brothers and released an album, earning a Best Newcomer nomination at the Jz Awards the following year. He is a regular at international jazz events, performing at the Java Jazz Festival, Stuttgart Jazz Open (Germany), Shanghai Jazz Festival, Taichung Jazz Festival, and Hong Kong International Jazz Festival.
In recent years, Fish has focused on music education across Taiwan and Hong Kong. He runs the popular "Fish Huang Drum Studio" YouTube channel and founded the online academy "Learn To Be Pro," offering systematic drum instruction. He also founded JazzNode, a pan-Asian jazz platform connecting the communities, event listings, and artist interviews of Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia. In 2020 he served as a juror for Taiwan's Golden Indie Music Awards, and has lectured at Tainan National University of the Arts.
He is an official endorser of world-renowned instrument brands including Canopus Drums, Meinl Cymbals, Schlagwerk, and Vater Drumsticks.
